Meet Jack Rabbidge

I am a freelance theatre technician, musician, and sound designer, with a special interest in opera and musical theatre. Starting as a software developer before discovering a love of music, I've found a niche in the sound design space where I can express his creative ideas through a technical lens.

My engineering background and keen interest in both hardware and software allow me to blend custom technology with art in a way that is often overlooked, especially in classical mediums. The result is a potent concoction of sonic mayhem (and occasionally good music, too).

About My Work

As a new entrant to the industry, Jack does not have a large portfolio of tech work to claim as his own. That doesn't mean he doesn't have plans, though. Jack hopes to modernise the way we experience the audio in theatre. Technologies like modular synthesis, interactive audio control, and high-performance DSP computing could be used to create immersive, tense, and evocative scenes. Many of these things have been done, but Jack believes there's still far more out there to do.

As a composer with an especially keen interest in opera, Jack also hopes to bring opera more into the modern era by incorporating modern musical genres and styles. Following in the footsteps of the likes of Anaïs Mitchell and Michael Chorney, it is with great pride that Jack works to hopefully push the medium forward.

Jack is also an electronics hobbyist, creating analog and digital synthesisers by hand. Going forward, he hopes to design and program more custom audio gear from the ground up. This of course goes hand in hand with his interest in revitalising live sound using such niche technologies as reactive audio and .
